AvaForCE studies the largest and most destructive snow avalanches in the mountains of Bulgaria, Romania and Switzerland. Using tree rings, historical maps, satellite images and computer simulations, we reconstruct past avalanches, look for their climate drivers, and explore how risk may change as winters get warmer. The goal is better hazard maps and safer mountains for everyone who lives, works and explores in avalanche terrain.
AvaForCE team held a working meeting in Bușteni and on the Transfăgărășan from 24 to 28 August 2026, reviewing first-year progress and coordinating work in Romania’s two main study regions.
The project was represented at TRACE 2026, the annual conference of the Association for Tree-Ring Research. Both national teams presented their work.
The consortium officially launched AvaForCE at a meeting in Davos, Switzerland, on 2–5 December 2025. The meeting brought together researchers from the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF, the University of Forestry in Sofia and the West University of Timișoara.
